Week 6. Question #2

I would say they use language differently because I feel as if men in the workforce have much more power than women when it comes to language.  We refer to the different occupations as “policemen”, “firemen”, “businessmen”, etc. although we know women are in those particular workforces as well. When I think doctor, I think male. When I think plumber, I think male. I am no exception to the wrongs in society. We know that men are not the only ones that work, yet we call the different occupations using “men” or “man” in the word. This is just as being talked down on as a woman. Not only do we see it in the workforce but we experience it in our conversations in our social lives. Some men tend to use words like “hot”, “beautiful”, and “sexy” in a condescending way towards women, such as cat calling them. You wouldn’t typically see women “cat calling” men out on the streets. Although there are differences in language between men and women, I don’t think there are a whole bunch of differences.

  1. Great post. I’m not sure why you referred to police, fire and businessmen on the other hand. Are they supposed to be the ones that you think of when you think of different languages between men and women? I do think that men and women both have very successful career choices, but I can understand you’re thought about men having overpowering jobs. I see what you’re saying, but I am yet to see women being talked down to. I am a fireman and one of my Captains is a woman, and you won’t tell the difference in her tone versus a man. I also agree with what men talk about versus what women talk about, which is sometimes negative.
